BPI & Certification

BPI LogoWho is BPI?

BPI is a leading developer of technical standards for home performance and weatherization retrofit work and are nationally recognized. The BPI standards use the house-as-a-system approach improving the performance of existing homes – an approach proven to reduce home owner's annual utility bills by as much as 20% or more. BPI standards or equivalent are cited by the Home Performance with ENERGY STAR ® program from the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as well as several state Weatherization Assistance Programs.

BPI Building Analyst Certification

A certified BPI Building Analyst energy auditor will have passed both a written and field exam. The process consists of a two-hour, 100-question written exam with a passing score of at least 70%. The two-hour field exam requires one to demonstrate competency with the energy audit process and equipment. BPI does not mandate formal training prior to the examination, but a classroom or online course is highly recommended. The BPI certification courses usually involve at least one week of full-time training.

With this certification, you will go beyond the traditional energy audit to perform comprehensive home assessments, identify problems at the root cause and prescribe and prioritize solutions based on building science.
